Conessionary bus fare changes

Conessionary bus pass travel between 9.30am and 11.00pm.

This is a proposal brought forward by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Concessionary Passengers will be able  to travel free at anytime but only when the scheme goes live, see below for clarity.

The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) provides eligible older and disabled residents with free off-peak bus travel on local services throughout England. The statutory core scheme operates from 09:30 to 23:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends and bank holidays, administered by local councils

The enhanced scheme, which was approved at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) last week, will lift all travel restrictions for disabled pass holders and their companion pass holders, meaning that they will be able to travel for free at any time so yes they will be able to travel before 9am. BUT only when the scheme goes live. Until this point, the 9.30am restriction will remain in place. This enhanced scheme will start in Wakefield and will be rolled out across West Yorkshire. The CA report references an early launch in Wakefield district from May 2026.

Further information is in the WYCA paper linked here: ENCTS Disabled Travel.pdf
