Road safety

Road safety concerns in Wharfedale.

As many people are aware, I have consistently fought for additional enforcement for road safety. There remain concerns at various locations in Burley and in Menston.

In Menston, I have been working hard to address issues on Bingley Road, and took a petition to council earlier this year, requesting that a zebra/pelican crossing point is installed. This will be disussed at the Shipley Area Committee on March 11th, 2026. This was supported by residents of Menston and presented by the lead petitioner, Peter Cochrane, picture on the right.

We have had one speeding enforcement session along Bingley Road, that’s simply not god enough, and speeding issues remain.

Working alongside West Yorkshire Police.

I have always worked with the police, particularly on speeding enforcement. We have agreed that the area needs additional enforcement and action is planned in the following areas:

  • Bingley Road, Menston.
  • Bradford Road, Burley in Wharfedale and Menston.
  • The A65 Burley bypass.
  • Other problem areas are being considered.

Highways and quarry trucks.

Many amongst you have raised issues about the use of Bingley Road by a significant number of quarry trucks. I had addressed this issue with the highways team in June last year. I had asked that the increase in traffic movements from the Hawkesworth Quarry was more equitably split, noting that the anticipated number of trips was to double. The situation has been addressed and I can confirm that quarry trucks are now travelling through Hawkesworth, having spent a day in Hawkesworth to establish that remedial action had been taken.

The A65 at Sun Lane.

Sun Lane Road Safety AuditThe A65 at this point remains unadopted by the Local Authority (Bradford). Early last year I met with David Wilson Homes (DWH) to discuss the Stage 3 Road Safety Audit that DWH ahd produced, and which I had requested a copy. This has been supplied to Bradford Council for information.

There are some challenges along this stretch of the highway on which I had worked with DWH’s highways team. Issues at this location are ongoing but I’ll endeavour to keep you all posted on progress.
